Each participant needs a day's worth of gorilla permits, which must be reserved and paid for in advance, in order to monitor gorillas. There are various daily permission limits for each gorilla park (Bwindi, Mgahinga, and Parc National des Volcans (PNV) in Rwanda) (32, 8 and 40 for Bwindi, Mgahinga and PNV respectively).
No one may track more than three times during the course of three days. Except in cases of illness, in which case a medical certificate must be produced, permits are not refundable. Young trackers under the age of 15 and those with illnesses are not permitted to track in order to protect gorillas from disease and to avoid problems with arduous conditions in the forests.
Visitors are recommended to use still cameras and to keep at least 5 meters away from the animals when taking photographs with flash. Professional filming entails additional costs. It can be difficult, exhausting, and rainy to track through the forest and through canopies of heavy vegetation; tracking sessions can range anything from 45 minutes to 9 hours.
Thus, trackers must be well-prepared with food and water as well as sturdy, water-resistant clothes. They also need to be in good physical shape. All trackers can hire porters to carry their equipment for a charge of $5–$20 per porter per day. Local communities near the Protected Area receive direct assistance from a portion of the fees paid to the park authorities.
After entering the forest, the following rules must be followed:
- No spitting allowed in parks
- No dumping trash in the park.
- Please refrain from coughing near the gorillas.
- Only whisper when speaking
- Avoid pointing towards the gorillas.
- You must make no threatening movements towards the gorillas.
- No hiding behind dense bushes. A gorilla might be surprised by you.
- Do not cry out, scream, speak out loud, or move quickly if a nettle stings you.
- Avoid looking directly at a gorilla if it charges or makes noise. Unless the guide instructs you to crouch or retreat, remain completely still.
